Fast beats fancy: web performance and Core Web Vitals for Merseyside businesses

A quick site wins more work than a pretty slow one. What Core Web Vitals actually measure, why they move rankings and revenue, and how we hit them — for clients in Liverpool and worldwide.

A gorgeous website that takes five seconds to load is a bad website. Your visitor has already thumbed back to Google before your hero video has stopped buffering. Speed isn't a nice-to-have — it's the thing your prettiness is sitting on top of.

Google agrees, which is why it bakes speed into search rankings through a set of measures called Core Web Vitals.

What Core Web Vitals actually measure

Three numbers, each answering a plain-English question about how the page feels:

The three numbers Google watches — and the thresholds you want to be under.
  • LCP — does the main thing appear quickly? Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
  • INP — when I tap, does it react? Aim for under 200 milliseconds.
  • CLS — does the layout stay put, or does a button jump as I go to press it? Aim for under 0.1.

Why it's worth real money

This isn't abstract. Google's own research found that as a mobile page's load time goes from one second to three, the chance a visitor bounces jumps sharply — and it only gets worse from there. Every second of delay is leads walking out of the shop.

Roughly how visitor retention falls as a page slows down (based on Google's mobile research).

How we build genuinely fast sites

  • Ship less to the browser — static pages where possible, and only the JavaScript that earns its place.
  • Right-size images — modern formats, correct dimensions, lazy-loaded below the fold.
  • Reserve space — so nothing jumps as the page fills in (that's your CLS sorted).
  • Measure on real devices — on a mid-range phone and a Merseyside mobile signal, not a fibre connection in the office.
Stupid-fast, accessible, and weird in the parts that count. Fancy is easy; fast is a decision you make on day one.

This is the bar we hold every build to — see how we approach web, browse our recent work, or get your site checked.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my own Core Web Vitals?

Run your URL through Google's free PageSpeed Insights, or open the Lighthouse tab in Chrome's developer tools. Both report LCP, INP and CLS along with specific fixes. We're happy to run a free check and translate the results into plain English.

Does site speed really affect Google rankings?

Yes. Core Web Vitals are a confirmed ranking signal. They rarely outweigh great content on their own, but when two sites are otherwise close, the faster, smoother one wins — and users prefer it too.

Can you make my existing website faster, or do I need a rebuild?

Often we can get big wins on an existing site — images, scripts and layout stability are common quick fixes. If the platform itself is the bottleneck, we'll say so and show you the trade-off rather than pushing a rebuild you don't need.

Isn't a fast site just a boring, plain one?

No. Fast and striking aren't opposites — you just build the effects the right way. We ship distinctive, animated sites that still load quickly, because performance is designed in from the start rather than bolted on.

Do you build websites for businesses outside Liverpool?

Yes. We're a Liverpool studio working across Merseyside and the North West, and we build and optimise sites for clients throughout the UK and internationally.
