App store accounts, reviews and rejections: what to expect before launch

Building the app is only part of the job. Developer accounts, store listings and review rules can add weeks if you leave them to the end.

Many first-time app owners assume that when the build is finished, the app is live. In reality, Apple and Google both sit between you and your users, and each has rules. Plan for that early and launch day is far less stressful.

Set up developer accounts early

Both stores need a developer account in your business's name. Organisation accounts generally need a legal entity and a D-U-N-S number for Apple, which can take time to arrange. Check the current requirements and fees on each store's site, and start this while the app is still being built.

Prepare the listing

You'll need a name, description, screenshots, an icon, a support URL, a privacy policy and age-rating answers. Both stores also ask you to declare what data the app collects. Be accurate; mismatches between your declaration and what the app does are a classic cause of trouble.

Common reasons for rejection

Crashes or broken links during review. Missing or vague privacy information. Requiring login without giving reviewers a test account. Placeholder content. Payment for digital goods outside the store's system where it's not allowed. Apps that are really just a website in a wrapper with no added value. Read each store's current guidelines before you design, not after.

Build in slack

Review times vary, and a rejection means fix, resubmit, wait again. Leave a couple of weeks in your plan. For the bigger picture, see what it really takes to build an app.

Frequently asked questions

How long does app review take?

It varies, from hours to several days, and can be longer for a first submission. Plan some slack rather than relying on the quickest case.

Can I launch on one store first?

Yes. Many businesses start with the platform most of their customers use, then add the other.

Do I need my own developer account?

We'd recommend it. Owning the account means you own the listing and can move supplier without losing your app.
